Learn About Abrasive Blasting
In this procedure, high-pressure air is used to propel small particles at a surface in order to clean and add a profile to it. The profile is a measure of the overall surface roughness. The harder these particles hit the surface, the faster they can clean the surface and the deeper the profile.
For any painting job, a rough surface is needed for the paint to stick to the item. However, an extremely rough surface can create a problem, making it difficult to make the finish smooth or glossy.
Aside from painting, abrasive blasting can also be used for the following purposes:
- Frosting glass
- Engraving stone, wood, and glass
- Addition of textured surfaces to metals and concrete
- Removal of weak surface concrete portions from precast concrete

Why Should You Trust Us for Your Abrasive Blasting Needs
The family owned Mechanical Jobbers deals with a variety of blast media. Our shop is full of experts who can blast and paint just about anything. In case you find that the product is too big or too heavy to travel, or would just rather us come to you, our mobile crew will arrive with the necessary equipment to complete the project on location.

Blasting Media We Use
- Aluminum oxide
- Aluminum oxide is the second hardest material after diamonds, which makes it fit to be used on harder metals
- Its consistent grit size allows us to produce a smoother surface than some other blasting materials
- The blasting process is also comparatively faster when aluminum oxide is used as it is a sharp material. This also adds to the creation of a smooth surface
- Coal slag
- Also known as Black Beauty, Black Magic, or Black Magnum
- Coal slag is the preferred option when dealing with materials made of steel
- In addition to being economical, it aids in fast cutting and is generally used in rust, paint, and scale removal
Choose From a Variety of Blasting Procedures
Bead blasting
- Makes use of steel, glass, or plastic grit
- Steel grit is used to ensure a smooth finish
- Glass grit is used for general cleaning and for creating a satin or matte finish
- Plastic grit can be used for removing paint from delicate surfaces, such as fiberglass, without damaging the surface
- Performed using walnut shells or corn cobs that do not damage the substrate
- Allows for safe organic breakdown of materials
- This can be used for areas that need to be food safe and free from contaminants that may otherwise result from the blasting of other media
- Corn cob can be safely used on glass, allowing you to directly clean it
- Cuts prep time for areas with multiple surfaces
Sand blasting
- Most common type of abrasive blasting
- Cheaper than many other types of blasting
- Should be performed in open spaces or be confined to blasting cabinets as the process can create a lot of dust
- Usually leaves a rough surface that is ideal for the preparation of steel, concrete, stone, glass, and other hard surfaces
Soda blasting
- It is a great procedure to remove unwanted products from delicate surfaces
- It is also used for rust or graffiti removal
- Used for sensitive applications like automobile restorations and cleaning food processing facilities
- Soda offers many advantages, such as having non-toxic properties, ease of cleanup, and a delicate nature that cuts down prep time
